Quick answer

What is teen therapy?

Teen therapy is counselling designed for adolescents, usually around ages 13 to 18. A therapist helps teens talk about stress, emotions, relationships and identity, and teaches practical skills from approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT). Parents are involved in ways that respect the teen’s privacy and support progress at home.

Teens often open up more easily with a neutral adult outside the family. Early support can prevent problems from growing.

We start by meeting the teen and, usually, a parent. Then most sessions are one-on-one with the teen, with check-ins with parents as agreed.

How sessions can look

Sessions are usually 50 to 60 minutes, in person at our South Edmonton office or online by secure video anywhere in Alberta.

A relationship built on trust

Therapists work to make teens feel respected and heard, which is the foundation for change.

Practical CBT and DBT skills

Tools for managing anxiety, low mood, anger and big emotions, solving problems and coping with stress in healthy ways.

Family involvement

Parent sessions and family meetings when helpful, to improve communication and support new skills at home.

Frequently asked questions about teen therapy

Teens need privacy to open up, so details usually stay confidential. Your therapist will explain at the start what is shared with parents, and will always involve parents if there is a safety concern.

That is common. A first session to meet the therapist, or starting online, can make it easier. Parent support sessions can also help while your teen decides.

Anxiety, low mood, stress, anger, self-esteem, friendships, bullying, family conflict, identity, and adjusting to change such as immigration or separation.

If your teen is at immediate risk, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. Your teen can also call or text 9-8-8 any time, or Kids Help Phone at 1-800-668-6868.

No. You can book directly online or by phone. A doctor’s referral is not required, although some insurance plans ask for one, so check your plan if you plan to claim.

Many extended health plans cover counselling with a Registered Clinical Social Worker. We direct bill select insurance providers, and eligible clients can access free counselling through NIHB and IFHP. Check your plan for coverage details.
