Quick answer

What is chronic pain counselling?

Chronic pain counselling is psychological support for people living with pain that lasts three months or longer. It does not replace medical treatment. Instead, it helps you manage the stress, low mood, frustration and fear that often come with pain, using evidence-based approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT).

Pain is real and physical, and the way the nervous system processes pain is also influenced by stress, sleep and emotions. That is why psychological skills can make a meaningful difference.

How we help

How we help with chronic pain

We work alongside your doctor, physiotherapist or other providers, focusing on how pain affects your life and what you can do to regain a sense of control.

How sessions can look

Sessions are usually 50 to 60 minutes, in person at our South Edmonton office or online by secure video anywhere in Alberta.

CBT for chronic pain

Helps you notice and change thoughts and habits that increase suffering, such as catastrophizing, and build coping strategies for flare-ups.

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)

Focuses on making room for pain while still moving toward what matters to you, so pain stops being in charge of your choices.

Pacing, mindfulness and relaxation

Balancing activity and rest, calming the stress response and improving sleep, which can reduce how intense pain feels.
