Understanding Mental Health and the Importance of Accessible Support
Mental health is just as important as physical health, yet it is often overlooked or stigmatized. At Disha Counselling & Wellness Centre, we believe that everyone deserves to access the mental health care they need, regardless of their financial situation. Mental health challenges, such as anxiety, depression, trauma, and stress, can affect anyone at any time, and the journey to recovery should never be hindered by the inability to afford care.
Our commitment to providing free counselling services through the Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) program for First Nations and Inuit individuals and the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) for refugee claimants is one of the core ways we work to break down barriers to mental health support in Alberta.
The Role of Counselling in Mental Health Recovery
Counselling is a powerful tool that can help individuals address and overcome the challenges that affect their mental and emotional well-being. Whether you are struggling with the stress of everyday life, adjusting to a new country, coping with the aftermath of trauma, or working through family or relationship issues, therapy can provide a safe space to explore your feelings, gain clarity, and develop strategies for managing difficult emotions.
Therapeutic Approaches at Disha Counselling & Wellness Centre
At Disha Counselling & Wellness Centre, we use a range of evidence-based therapeutic approaches tailored to the unique needs of each individual, ensuring that every client receives the best possible care. Here are some of the approaches we employ:
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT):
CBT is a widely used therapeutic approach that helps individuals identify and challenge negative thought patterns and behaviors. By learning to reframe these thoughts, clients can develop healthier coping mechanisms and a more positive outlook on life. CBT is particularly effective for individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, and stress-related conditions.Trauma-Informed Care:
For individuals who have experienced trauma, healing can seem daunting. Trauma-informed care focuses on understanding the profound effects trauma has on an individual’s emotional, mental, and physical well-being. Our trauma-informed counselors work with clients at their own pace, creating a safe and compassionate environment for recovery. This approach is especially crucial for individuals from refugee and Indigenous communities who may have experienced trauma due to displacement or historical oppression.Narrative Therapy:
In narrative therapy, clients are encouraged to view their problems from a different perspective, often by viewing themselves as separate from their issues. This empowering approach helps clients reframe their life stories, promoting a sense of agency and self-worth. It is particularly helpful for individuals who feel stuck in a negative narrative about themselves or their lives.Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT):
SFBT focuses on identifying solutions and setting goals rather than dwelling on the problems. It is a future-focused, goal-oriented therapy that can help individuals overcome obstacles quickly and effectively. This approach is ideal for clients who are looking to address specific issues and are motivated to make changes in their lives.Family Therapy:
Family dynamics play a significant role in an individual’s mental health. Family therapy can help address conflict, improve communication, and strengthen relationships. Whether it’s helping parents navigate challenges with their children or resolving ongoing conflicts between family members, our therapists provide a non-judgmental space where families can work together to find solutions.Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR):
MBSR is a therapeutic approach that incorporates mindfulness meditation to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. By learning to be present and aware in the moment, clients can develop a deeper sense of calm and control over their emotions. This approach is often used alongside other therapies to enhance their effectiveness.
Why Mental Health Support is Crucial for Indigenous Communities
In Alberta, and across Canada, Indigenous communities face unique mental health challenges, many of which stem from historical and ongoing systemic issues. Colonialism, residential schools, and the forced removal from ancestral lands have had lasting effects on the mental and emotional well-being of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.
The trauma resulting from these experiences, combined with ongoing challenges such as discrimination, poverty, and lack of access to healthcare, means that many Indigenous individuals face compounded mental health difficulties. At Disha Counselling & Wellness Centre, we understand the importance of culturally sensitive therapy and provide services that honor the traditions, values, and experiences of Indigenous communities.
Our NIHB-approved counsellor works closely with clients to incorporate Indigenous healing practices alongside traditional therapeutic methods. This holistic approach ensures that the mental health care provided is not only effective but also respectful of cultural identity and heritage.
Supporting Refugee Claimants Through the IFHP Program
For newcomers to Canada, the journey of adjusting to a new life can be filled with uncertainty, isolation, and emotional stress. Refugee claimants often arrive in Canada with histories of trauma, displacement, and loss. They may struggle to find stability in their new surroundings, making it even more important to have access to mental health care during this transition.
Disha Counselling & Wellness Centre is proud to support refugee claimants through the IFHP program, which ensures that individuals who are awaiting their refugee claim decision have access to free healthcare, including mental health services. The therapy provided under this program focuses on addressing the mental health needs of refugee claimants, with an emphasis on trauma-informed care and adjustment support.
Mukesh Mishra, MSW, RCSW, is trained in providing therapy that acknowledges the unique challenges faced by refugees, including cultural adjustment, loss, and navigating the complexities of immigration. He works closely with clients to ensure that their experiences and struggles are understood and validated, creating an environment where healing and resilience can flourish.
The Benefits of Online Counselling for Clients Across Alberta
In today’s fast-paced world, it can be difficult to find the time and resources to attend in-person therapy sessions. At Disha Counselling & Wellness Centre, we understand that geographic location or busy schedules should not prevent individuals from accessing the mental health support they need.
That’s why we offer online counselling services for clients across Alberta. Whether you live in remote communities, smaller towns, or simply prefer the convenience of receiving therapy from the comfort of your own home, our online sessions provide a flexible, secure, and confidential space to work on your mental health. Our therapists are fully trained to deliver high-quality care in an online format, ensuring that every session is as effective as an in-person visit.
Engaging with the Community
At Disha Counselling & Wellness Centre, we believe that mental health care is not just about individual therapy sessions, but also about fostering a supportive community. We regularly host workshops, webinars, and community outreach initiatives to raise awareness about mental health issues and provide education on how to navigate challenges. Our goal is to create a stigma-free environment where people feel comfortable talking about their mental health and seeking help when needed.
We are also deeply involved in supporting local Indigenous communities, refugee organizations, and other vulnerable groups through partnerships, advocacy, and educational initiatives. By collaborating with local agencies, we aim to strengthen community ties and ensure that mental health support is accessible to everyone who needs it.
