Quick answer

What is PTSD treatment?

PTSD treatment is therapy for the lasting effects of a traumatic event, such as an assault, accident, violence, disaster, war or sudden loss. Trauma-focused therapies, including trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy and EMDR, are recommended first-line treatments. They help reduce flashbacks, nightmares, avoidance and hyperarousal, and change the beliefs trauma leaves behind.

Treatment starts with safety and stabilization skills. Processing traumatic memories only begins when you feel ready.
