Child Counselling in Edmonton

Children do not always have the words for what they feel. Child counselling helps them express emotions, build coping skills and feel more confident, with parents involved every step of the way.

Quick answer

What is child counselling?

Child counselling is therapy adapted to a child’s age and development. Instead of relying only on talking, counsellors often use play, drawing, stories and activities to help children express feelings, make sense of experiences and learn skills for managing worry, anger and big emotions. Parents are included so new skills can be supported at home.

Children respond well to early support. Small concerns addressed early are often easier to resolve than problems left to grow.

Frequently asked questions about child counselling

You will have regular check-ins with the counsellor. Children have some privacy so they feel safe, but parents are kept informed about progress and always told about any safety concerns.

Parents are usually involved through parent meetings and sometimes joint sessions. Your involvement is one of the biggest factors in your child’s progress.

Keep it simple and positive, for example: you will meet someone whose job is to help kids with feelings, and you can play and talk together.

Online sessions can work for some older children. Younger children often do best in person, and we can talk about which format fits your child.

No. You can book directly online or by phone. A doctor’s referral is not required, although some insurance plans ask for one, so check your plan if you plan to claim.

Many extended health plans cover counselling with a Registered Clinical Social Worker. We direct bill select insurance providers, and eligible clients can access free counselling through NIHB and IFHP. Check your plan for coverage details.
