Quick answer

What is parent-teen conflict counselling?

Parent-teen conflict counselling is family-focused therapy that helps parents and teenagers communicate better, resolve recurring arguments and rebuild trust. A neutral therapist meets with parent and teen together, separately or both, to understand each perspective and teach practical skills for listening, setting fair boundaries and solving problems without escalation.

Conflict is a normal part of adolescence as teens build independence. Counselling helps when arguments are constant, intense or damaging the relationship.

Why parent-teen conflict happens

Teens are forming their own identity while parents try to keep structure. These are the most common sources of tension.

Communication breakdowns

Teens feel misunderstood; parents struggle to reach their child’s point of view.

Behaviour changes

Defiance, secrecy or withdrawal that parents find hard to respond to.

Academic pressure

High expectations that build stress and resentment on both sides.

Social pressures

Peers and social media that overwhelm teens and spill tension into home life.

Cultural and generational gaps

Different values or expectations, especially in families who have immigrated.

Mental health struggles

Anxiety or low mood that shows up as arguments and shutdowns.

A calmer home is possible

How we help

How we help parents and teens

Every family is unique. We combine evidence-based methods to address the root causes of conflict, not just the arguments, and make sure every voice is heard.

How sessions can look

Sessions are usually 50 to 60 minutes, in person at our South Edmonton office or online by secure video anywhere in Alberta. Parents and teens may meet the therapist together, separately, or both.

Family systems therapy

We look at the family as a system where each person’s actions affect the others, then change the communication and behaviour patterns that keep conflict going.

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)

Parents and teens learn to notice unhelpful thoughts that fuel conflict and replace them with more constructive ones, while managing the stress and anxiety underneath.

Boundaries and parenting strategies

Teens need structure; parents need to know when to give space. We help you agree on fair rules, consequences and ways to repair after arguments.

Frequently asked questions about parent-teen conflict counselling

No. Depending on your goals, sessions may include parent and teen together, each of you separately, or a mix. Your therapist will recommend what fits your family.

That is common. Many families start with parent-only sessions to build strategies at home, and teens often join once they see counselling is a neutral space.

Teens get a private space to talk, and your therapist explains at the start how information is shared within the family. As with all counselling, there are safety-related limits to confidentiality, which are discussed openly.

It varies by family. Some notice change within a few sessions; others benefit from longer support. We review progress with you regularly.

No. You can book directly online or by phone. A doctor’s referral is not required, although some insurance plans ask for one, so check your plan if you plan to claim.

Many extended health plans cover counselling with a Registered Clinical Social Worker. We direct bill select insurance providers, and eligible clients can access free counselling through NIHB and IFHP. Check your plan for coverage details.
