Quick answer

What is OCD therapy?

OCD therapy is treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder, a condition involving unwanted, distressing thoughts (obsessions) and repeated behaviours or mental rituals (compulsions) done to reduce that distress. The leading psychological treatment is cognitive behavioural therapy with exposure and response prevention (ERP), which helps you face triggers gradually while resisting compulsions, so anxiety decreases over time.

Having intrusive thoughts does not mean you want to act on them. OCD is a common, treatable condition, and you do not need to share every thought to start therapy.

Intrusive thoughts

Checking

Repeatedly checking locks, appliances, messages or your own memory to feel certain.

Contamination fears

Excessive washing or cleaning, or avoiding things that feel unclean.

Needing things to feel right

Arranging, counting or repeating actions until it feels just right.

Reassurance seeking

Asking others or searching online again and again to feel less anxious.

Time lost to rituals

Obsessions and compulsions taking up an hour or more a day or interfering with life.

How we help

How OCD therapy works

We begin by mapping your obsessions, compulsions and triggers, and explaining how the OCD cycle works. Then we plan treatment steps together.

How sessions can look

Sessions are usually 50 to 60 minutes, in person at our South Edmonton office or online by secure video anywhere in Alberta.

Exposure and response prevention (ERP)

You gradually face situations that trigger obsessions while choosing not to perform the compulsion. Over time the brain learns the feared outcome does not need the ritual, and anxiety reduces.

Cognitive strategies

We work on beliefs that fuel OCD, such as an inflated sense of responsibility or the need for certainty, so thoughts feel less threatening.

Acceptance and family support

Skills for letting thoughts come and go without fighting them, plus guidance for family members on how to support you without feeding compulsions.

Frequently asked questions about OCD therapy

It can feel challenging, but ERP is always gradual and planned with you. You start with small steps and only move forward when you feel ready.

You can share at your own pace. Therapists who treat OCD understand that intrusive thoughts are common symptoms, not a reflection of who you are.

Many people notice improvement within 12 to 20 sessions of ERP-focused therapy, though it depends on the severity and type of OCD.

No. You can book directly online or by phone. A doctor’s referral is not required, although some insurance plans ask for one, so check your plan if you plan to claim.

Many extended health plans cover counselling with a Registered Clinical Social Worker. We direct bill select insurance providers, and eligible clients can access free counselling through NIHB and IFHP. Check your plan for coverage details.
