Quick answer
Clinical supervision is a formal, structured relationship in which a qualified supervisor supports a social worker’s clinical practice, ethics and professional growth. In Alberta, supervised practice is part of moving from provisional to full registration with the Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW), gaining authorization for psychosocial intervention, and working toward the clinical registry (RCSW).
Provisional RSWs need 1,500 hours of supervised social work practice (1,000 on some pathways) to move to full registration, and ACSW recommends about one hour of supervision every two weeks, roughly 26 hours over a full-time year. RCSW designation requires 1,600 hours of direct clinical practice and 100 hours of clinical supervision, at least 50 of which must be with an RCSW supervisor. Supervision is provided by Mukesh Mishra, MSW, RCSW, an ACSW-approved RCSW supervisor.
