A mental health assessment is a structured conversation, often with questionnaires, that helps a qualified professional understand your mental health, what is affecting it and what support would help. People get assessments to guide treatment, or because an employer, school, lawyer, court or immigration process has asked for one. A typical assessment covers your current concerns, history, relationships, health, substance use and safety, and ends with findings and recommendations, usually in a written report.
Key takeaways
The purpose shapes the assessment, so tell your assessor who asked for it and what they need.
Depending on the question, an assessment may be general or focused. Examples include:
Most assessments end with a summary of findings and recommendations, such as counselling, a referral to a physician, workplace accommodations or further testing. Formal reports are written for the specific purpose requested. Ask in advance about timelines and fees.
An assessment can identify symptoms and needs and recommend next steps. Some formal diagnoses, and any medication, are provided by physicians, psychiatrists or psychologists. Your assessor will explain what their assessment can and cannot provide.
